Why am I growing it.

It flowers in the Wintertime. I rest my case, no further reason really necessary!
But, all jokes aside, this darling tree and its ever so dainty flowers are blissful.
We have a standard tree outside the lounge room windows. The tree is about fourteen years old and its canopy now stretches the length of the windows, it is a highlight of my Winter’s day. To look out the windows and see the little flowers sprinkled along the branches like fairy lights, especially at my favourite time of the day, as dusk falls and the sky turns that wonderful inky blue.

We have also planted six trees along the front boundary of the Quince Orchard. Meticulously planned to make sure there are enough blooms throughout the Winter months – as the Winter Flowering Cherry ‘Autumnalis’ blossom starts to fade it overlaps with another Ornamental Cherry Prunus ‘Prentice Dancer’ that blooms in early Spring and is then followed by the Quince blossom. Timing is everything in our cool climate garden and I’ve worked hard to make sure there is always something for the bees and beneficial insects.

Speaking of Bees and Beneficial Insects.

If you are pruning at the moment, please consider leaving branches in a pile for a couple of days before putting them in the compost, green waste or through the mulcher – it will give the Ladybugs and Beneficial Insects time to decamp and find another cosy spot in the garden.

Until next time, love from the garden.
