CWA Tomato Relish.
“This recipe has been handed down through the family. My mother made it when I was young, I make it and now my children do too.” Phyllis Hingston, – Sassafras / Wesley Vale branch, Tasmania.
I can’t recommend this recipe enough. I grew up only eating homemade tomato sauce, it was a treat to go to a friends house and have bought tomato sauce! But oh, how I miss that homemade tomato sauce from my childhood. I’m very happy to say that I have found an absolute ripper of a substitute. This recipe is easy, can be done in stages and is so worth the effort. The recipe is in the Country Women’s Association Cookbook published by Penguin, it is also on the Penguin website (where I found it). Due to copyright, I’m not sure if I can publish the recipe here on my website so to be on the safe side here is the link:
Have this Tomato Relish on anything you would have tomato sauce on. It is also lovely in a cheese toastie.
We have made six batches of this tomato relish and I’m a bit worried that we will run out before tomato season, when you typically make tomato preserves. If we run out I’ll buy organic canned tomatoes and make the relish – after all it is much better than the bought tomato sauce that now tastes so sickly sweet.
Hope your week is off to a good start.
Much love,
