We don’t use treated pine in the garden. We use rough sawn Tasmanian Oak.
Michael and I believe that all garden materials and resources have a life span and that includes timber. After 25 years of gardening together we have seen how gardening materials and resources deteriorate, from a trowel to netting to compost bins to secateurs to fencing to raised garden beds to a poly tunnel, and everything and anything in between.

Our goal is to use as many materials as possible that can be returned to the earth after they can no longer be used.
Timber can naturally return to the earth once it’s deteriorated and can’t be used for its intended purpose.
Whether it is cut up and placed in the bottom of a raised garden bed to help contribute to creating a hugelkultur raised bed system, burnt in the fire place to create ash that is the spread on the garden or chopped up and used to create habitat in parts of the garden that encourages wildlife habitat. If possible salvageable parts of the timber can be used for smaller items for the garden.
Untreated rough sawn timber that we use deteriorates and treated pine deteriorates.
Untreated rough sawn timber can be returned to the earth within our lifetime, treated pine goes into landfill and for how long?
